Algeria 4X4 Overland Expedition
13-27 February 2025
From our arrival at the port of Mostaganem, where we meet up with our Touareg guide, we embark on a 3-day 2,000km drive south to the desert town of Illizi, headquarters of our local guide's family, from where we subsequently head further south to Djanet, and from there we venture deep into the Sahara proper, the Tadrart on the Libyan border. The Tadrart region is world-renowned for its fascinating archaeological formations, and equally for its incredibly well-preserved prehistoric rock art, notably in the Tassili n'Ajjer, the national park on a sprawling plateau. Our return journey is via the Hoggar Mountains, back to In Salah, for a 2-day 1,400km drive north to our departure port. Eligibility criteria apply, please contact us to discuss requirements before booking.
Fully catered as always, featuring our unique delicious BBQ feasts.

Highlights - Algeria has the most stunning desert scenery in the whole of the Sahara Desert. The views in the south of the country can only be described as spectacular. Bizarre rock formations are surrounded by golden red sand, and one's imagination stretches to new heights when confronted with this magnificent and unique landscape. The rock carvings in the Tassili n'Ajjer are amongst the oldest pre-historic art in the world, which can only be accessed by 4X4 vehicle, and we will venture deep into the Tadrart Gorge on our quest to see some of the most stunning examples. In the Hoggar Mountains we find some of the highest mountains in the Sahara, and high up at 9000 feet on the Assekrem summit, the monks celebrate mass every morning, in their tiny monastery. Father Foucauld's refuge nowadays welcomes travellers from all over the world, in this unreal alpine environment, and the little settlements of Ideles and Hirhafok on the way to the Assekrem, mainly see intrepid voyagers passing by, though we will take tea with the Touaregs after crossing from Djanet to the Hoggar.

"Just returned from Algeria with incredible memories of this breathtaking country. With its vast landscapes, dramatic rock formations, and towering 300ft dunes, Algeria offers the ultimate Sahara experience—you truly have to be there to appreciate it. Barrie makes it all accessible, handling visas, routes, logistics, preparation advice, and, of course, great food. Overall, I had an amazing time and highly recommend it!" Aidan Hannigan
"Another trip completed to Algeria with a great guide. Thanks Barry, this one was even better than the last, which I didn’t think was possible. Had an amazing experience, food as always was delicious. If you ever need a reference to anyone that's thinking of coming on one of your trips, you can definitely give them my number. Thanks." Mitch Randle
"Just back from Algeria, which is without question one of the most astonishing places in the world to visit. We were privileged to travel the length of the country to the Tadrart Rouge, a dramatic desert landscape with sandstone arches, peaks and prehistoric rock carvings. The country is vast and the Algerian people are incredibly friendly and welcoming. We had a great team led by Barrie who made the trip possible, handling logistics, visa procedures and of course, the food! A fantastic time and memories to last a lifetime." John Murphy
"We arrived back from our expedition to Algeria only yesterday and… what a trip. Algeria is a vast country, and this expedition is not for the faint hearted. To get the best, you have to travel long distances, and it will test your vehicle of choice. Our resourceful and well-travelled fellow expeditionaries made great company and together we ensured no one got left behind. Barrie was his own inimitable self, doing the organising, and preparing great food while our Algerian guide provided us with the assurance of travelling the best routes and seeing the best sights. Highly recommended!" Paul Butler
"Wow, what a tour this was! It was my first 4x4 adventure (due to the nature of the adventure I could only go on this tour thanks to my cousin's (Aiden) experience). It's definitely not for the faint hearted, there is a lot of driving we covered over 3K miles in Algeria alone over the 15 days. But man was it worth it. The Algerian Sahara is absolutely amazing to be able to see cave paintings and rock art that dates back to roughly 8000BC is a humbling experience, as is seeing the fossilized remains of coral in the rock. I've literally come back with hundreds of photos none of which do any justice to the actual experience! Barrie is an amazing leader and a great cook. It was truly an adventure of a lifetime, thank you Barrie and my fellow explorers! Looking forward to the next adventure!" Rod Glasgow
